Sing it. It quotes nothing and never says it is scripture. It borrows one image from Isaiah 1:18 and answers it with the cross. Read Isaiah 1:16-20 once and you will hear more in the refrain.✓ The hymn does not say it is quoting Isaiah, so nothing in it can be a misquotation; the debt to the verse is an image, not a citation
⚠ Isaiah's scarlet and crimson are dye words, not stain words. Barnes describes the colour as fast and fixed, not removable by dew, rain, washing or long use. The refrain's picture of a mark left behind keeps the colour and softens the reason it could not come out
